Plaque psoriasis is a complex, chronic disease. As such, using multiple therapies to both clear plaques and help delay their recurrence is an optimal long-term management strategy. Topical Vitamin D₃ agents address the chronic nature of plaque psoriasis and are considered safe for long-term use. Initiating topical Vitamin D₃ agents at the onset of therapy may provide a sustained benefit, while other treatments that can only be used for a limited time, such as topical steroids, need to be discontinued.

Important Safety Information for Clobex® Products

Clobex® (clobetasol propionate), 0.05%, is a super-high potent topical corticosteroid formulation indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe plaque psoriasis.

Clobetasol propionate has been shown to suppress the HPA axis at the lowest doses tested.

Adverse events associated with use of Clobex® (clobetasol propionate, 0.05%) Spray, Lotion and/or Shampoo include burning/stinging, skin dryness, irritation, erythema, hyperpigmentation, telangiectasia and skin atrophy. In clinical trials, these side effects were typically mild in nature and transient.

Clobex® Spray, Lotion and Shampoo, 0.05%, are not recommended for use on anyone younger than 18 years of age. Clobetasol propionate, 0.05%, should not be used on the face, groin or axillae, and the total dosage should not exceed 50 g (50 mL or 1.75 fl oz of Shampoo or Lotion, or 59 mL or 2 fl oz of Spray) per week. Patients should use Clobex® Shampoo, 0.05%, Clobex® Spray, 0.05%, or Clobex® Lotion, 0.05%, only for the minimum period necessary to achieve desired results, and treatment beyond 2 weeks in psoriasis should be weighed against the potential risk for HPA axis suppression. Important Safety Information for Vectical® Ointment

Vectical® (calcitriol) Ointment 3 mcg/g is a topical treatment for mild to moderate plaque psoriasis in adults 18 years and older.

The most frequent adverse events (≥3%) reported in clinical trials were lab test abnormality, urine abnormality, psoriasis, hypercalciuria, pruritus and skin discomfort. Vectical® should be used with caution in patients with known or suspected disturbances in calcium homeostasis, who are taking calcium or Vitamin D supplements or who are on diuretics. If aberrations in parameters of calcium metabolism occur, discontinue use until these normalize. Caution patients to avoid excessive exposure to natural or artificial sunlight after applying the ointment. Avoid contact with eyes, lips and face. Limit use to 200 grams per week.
